Day 81

Numbers 13:26-14:45, Luke 4:14-37, Psalm 36:1-13

Today is all about God not really being honoured and in some cases actually getting rejected.

The small group have gone out from the people of Israel to go and check out the land that they are to go into. The report is good, they have gone out with God and they come back with God. Although there is a lot to be wary of in the land, they know that if God goes with them then they will be OK, they can take the land and they will get the milk and honey that the Lord has promised. But then the rest of the assembled crowd turned away from God, gave up trusting in him and it starts to go wrong.

When we look deep into our hearts, when we think about all that God has done for us, then we cannot fail to have trust in him. Despite the fact that they have been brought out of Egypt, they have seen many amazing thngs that God has done, they have been fed by God and protected by God and yet here they are in the desert having another whinge. I also think that if you were to see the presence of God then you must be in awe of him. whenever I can feel the Spirit really at work it is a real buzz and day in and day out these people saw God in the cloud, he was there among them and yet they still gave up on him.

Then Jesus is rejected in his own town, the people even wanted to throw him off the cliff. In the one minute they think he is all that is wonderful, the way that he preaches makes him the best thing since sliced bread and yet as soon as he says something that they didn't want to hear, oh how the tide turns. The Psalmist continues the theme with the lack of fear for the Lord and so here we lie, with people who do not want to pay the regard that is due to the Lord.

For us, we read these words amongst a lot of people who no longer pay any regard to God. There are a lot of people who deny him, abuse him and take his name in vane. Perhaps we need to take ourselves back to the place of the Israelites when each and every day they saw the presence of God in the cloud. When and where do we see the presence of God? When do we experience the Spirit at work? When we see that God is at work amongst us, when we experience his Spirit at work, we can get a very different perspective on things. We need ot pray that we never lose that perspective and that we can point people to the God who is aboe all things.

Get back to when you last experienced God in a real way and take things forward from there. Walking with God can take us to the land of milk and honey, we just need to give him our full focus.
