Day 82

Numbers 15:1-16:35, Luke 4:38-5:16, Psalm 37:1-9

The disciples in this passage have one of those "wow" moments, when doing what Jesus says just feels a bit crazy, but they do it anyway and it turns out right. A seasoned fisherman who knows fish better than anything has had  bad night, and then a carpenter gives him some tips. A bit like a butcher trying to tell a builder how to put bricks together! But Jesus just has something about him, he can talk to leprosy and make it disappear, he can talk to fevers and make them cool down. So when he tells you to pop your nets down the other way, funnily enough, you do it. And hey presto, result.

The Old Testament reading is a bit of a toughie, but the Soul Survivor Blog has a good look at what was going on with the poor sabbath breaker and delves into the fact that the problem goes much deeper than just trying to find some wood. It goes to the root of what is happening in Israel and the hence the ground opens up underneath some of them.

God spoke in the Old Testament and some people listened and some ignored him, God in Jesus spoke in the New Testament and some people listened and some ignored him, God speaks today and guess what, some people listen and some people ignore him. But check out in these readings the balance between those who go their own merry way and those who actually follow the word of God. Sickness and hungry or full of health and a net full of fish? Resting on the Sabbath or falling through a hole in the floor? The choice is yours.

God is speaking and when we stop long enough to listen we might actually like what we hear and find good paths to follow at his direction. Check out the last verse from our Gospel reading (Luke 5:16) "But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed." God was speaking and even Jesus listened.  Which example do you want to follow today, Jesus example or the example of a Sabbath breaker and a couple of blokes who fell down a hole.
