Day 84
Numbers 19:1-21:3, Luke5:33-6:11, Proverbs 8:1-11
Party time!!!! The people get water in the desert and Jesus talks of a feast while the bridegroom is still around. Then it goes a bit sour, Moses and Aaron actually rebelled against God and the people want to kill Jesus. In fact Aaron actually died. One of those parties where you can cry if you want to!
I'd forgotten that Moses and Aaron had rebelled against what God had said. The Lord said that they were to speak to the rock, that they could talk the water out of it and show how powerful God was. Moses and Aaron doubted though and went to get Aaron's special rod. The first thing I felt with this one is what God can do through people. He could have worked through Moses and all he had to do was speak to a rock. When we speak in the name of the Lord, we never know what might happen, miracles can take place when God works through us.
And how must Moses have felt. When we think back to all the grief that he and Aaron had gone through, all the times they had stood together between the people and God, they must have been as thick as thieves, as well as brother's they were real close colleagues and friends. And then Moses loses him on the top of a mountain. The people mourn for 30 days and you imagine that Moses must have done a fair amount of grieving too. But Moses is also very tight with God and in those circumstances we can get the strength that we need to carry on.
Back to the Gospel and the party. Jesus is around so the disciples get a pass from the usual rules. In his death, resurrection and Ascension, Jesus may have physically left the disciples, but he is with us in a very real sense and the party is still on. The bridegroom is still around and so spiritually we need not fast, spiritually we can party like mad. Perhaps the next question is who are we going to invite to the party.
When we look, there are still occurrences of water coming from the rock, and they can even happen though us. We can join with the Israelites as they celebrated and we can join with the disciples as they celebrate. The party is on, get the party clothes out and get the invites out. Who are you inviting?
