Leviticus 19:1-20:27, Mark 14:43-72, Proverbs 6:30-35
I’d like to think that Jesus was laughing when he stood in front of the Sanhedrin. I’m sure he wasn’t because it was all a bit too serious but you can imagine him looking around the room and seeing all the faces of the people who have tried to trick him. Looking at the Pharisee who asked him about John’s baptism and realising he has already won that battle. Then going around the room and probably being able to say the same thing about most of them.
You can almost imagine the Pharisees and Sadducees quaking in their boots remember that they had already tried to get the better of Jesus – on numerous occasions. And so they have to resort to lying – way to go ruling council. But then we look at a lot of modern governments and realise that they are not much better.
And the lies fail too, they really didn't have a case and the more they keep digging the worse it gets. But then Jesus does kind of hand it too them on a plate, but he tells the truth. And that is the thing about the truth, it is sharper than a two edged sword and it cut’s right to the heart. For the chief priest the truth hurt, quite a lot, but the truth set’s us free (John 8:32) for Jesus is the truth (and the way etc).
In proverbs the writer hints around the theme that the truth is the way forward and anything else is just a problem waiting to happen. We need to model the truth of Jesus if we are to turn away from a world that is full if lies and turn to a God who offers the only way in Christ.
Like the chief priest, some people may not like the truth about Jesus, but at the end of the day it is the only thing that will change their lives. Are you going to take the way of truth.
