Day 102

Deuteronomy 16:21-18:22, Luke 14:15-35, Psalm 44:13-26

Sometimes, we take for granted the fact that someone will govern us from Westminster and the Queen will do her bit from Buckingham palace. It is quite important though that we are a democratic monarchy. There are presidential governments and there are dictatorial governments, and then there are a number of things in between. All of this seems unimportant for us but we would know it if we had a different style of government. Imagine then this particular delivery from God, they had been wandering in the desert for 40 years, governed effectively by Moses and Aaron, ultimately governed by God. Now this way of life is to change, they are to be ruled by a King (God still the ultimate ruler of course), but the person they look to on earth is to change, and this is going to be a long term thing because, as with all royal families, it is going to stay in the family.

So Moses is to be replaced at the top, and we also find him replaced as the mouth piece of God. These are two very significant moves biblically, times are measured by Kings and if we were to take the names of David and Solomon, then we are looking at some very important biblical names. As for prophets, we will look at Isaiah, Jeremiah and many others later in the year in painting a picture of the later life of this nation. Kings and Prophets changed and shaped the course of Israel and this is the point at which God explains to the people that this is to be their future.  From a time when the nation of Israel stood out like a beacon among the neighbours, to a time in the Psalms when they were not quite so popular, a great deal of things happened in between and there had been a great deal of change.

How are you at handling change? For Israel, there is everything that we have mentioned above, and the fact that they are to stop being a wandering vagabond race. The whole way of life of this nation is to change and for many people that is very uncomfortable. Jesus talks about the cost of being a disciple, the taking up of one's cross. Sometimes that means laying something down, be that the certainty and comfort of one way of life or perhaps something a little less challenging. The people trusted in God through the change and so must we, he is the one constant no matter what storms are brewing around us. We need to allow him to be King and follow his word for life.
