Day 109

Deuteronomy 30:11-31:29, Luke 19:11-14, Psalm 48:1-8

No matter what time of year we read some passages, they still touch deep into our hearts. We may be used to the triumphal entry on Palm Sunday, the week before Easter, and yet we can't ignore its importance when we read it here. In reality Jesus was journeying to the cross from the moment that he entered the world, we could even argue that the journey started before those events in Bethlehem, and yet somehow, this entry into Jerusalem marks a major milestone in that journey and so we associate it with the start.

That is the beauty of the cross though, that the message is real and relevant throughout the year. Palm Sunday may be the start of the final leg to the cross, but it is the cross that is the start of new life for us. We come closer to the end of Moses life, and one of his final tasks is to admonish the people for they will rebel and it will all go wrong for them (we will come to that later). Despite and because of the rebellion, and because God knew his people would rebel again, he sent his only son to die on a cross. It is a death that has bought us life and so every time we read about Jesus taking a step closer to the cross, as we have today, we need to respond in some way. Sometimes that means that we need to take a step closer to God, just like Moses was encouraging the Israelites to.

In the Psalm today we get a worship song. The Psalms were set to music and we often find that they have inspired  people throughout the ages to write songs of praise to God. Why not end today praising God for the things that he has done in our lives, including the cross, and retouching with the psalmist who wanted to say something very similar all those years ago.
