Day 110

Deuteronomy 31:30-32:52, Luke 19:45-20:26, Psalm 48:9-14

I want to dwell on one sentence from the readings, right at the end of the Gospel. "And astonished by his answer, they became silent" (Luke 20:26). We have seen these words numerous times in our journey through the gospels and it is a summary of what Jesus does. He amazes people. It ties wonderfully neatly with the Psalm as well. The psalmist talks of wandering around Zion (another name for Jerusalem in this context) and marvelling at her towers, basically he is saying "look how amazing this place is, look how amazing the city of God is". In the wider context if this Psalm he is saying "Look how great God is, look what He has done". The opening line meditates on His unfailing love. That's how amazing the psalmist thinks that God is.

We have marvelled ourselves at creation and all that God did there, we can look at all He has done bringing His people out of Egypt or we can look at any one of the number of things we have seen God do in the Old Testament. But let's bring our amazement back to Jesus, the little baby, the man on the cross. The healer, the teacher, the friend, the leader. When we look at all that He has done through the Gospels we cannot fail to be bowled over. When we then focus on all that he has done on the cross, we have to be amazed.

These people in the Gospel passage were set out to trap Jesus, they were dead against him, their intention was to get him to say something that would get him killed. And they were amazed, astonished by what he said. The power of Christ can overcome any barrier and change any life, it is the power of unfailing love. Marvel for a moment on what Jesus has done for you, the way you have been astonished by him or overawed by his love.
