Day 114

Joshua 5:13-7:26, Luke 22:39-62, Psalm 50:16-23

Jesus is love!

Joshua gives us today two very different pictures of God. There is the God that is with the people, that walks around the city walls with them and that carries out the supernatural acts as the city walls come down. This is the God that is for them, because they are for him. We see the God that has helped them to capture a whole city and the God that honours his promise to the prostitute Rahab, she has helped the people of Israel and so her life is spared. And then the not quite so nice side to God. The God that demands justice for the people who have turned away from him. There is fire once more but at least (?) this time they are stoned to death first before they are burnt. Not sure which is better though.

We have been here before and seen these pictures and it doesn't getter any easier, seeing this side of God is hard. And yet the Gospel leads us to a very different place. In the Gospel we are a hairs width from the cross, Christ is asking God for a way out and yet he becomes the one who died in order that we would not have to.

Peter is perhaps the finest example of this. In these two passages, if we compare Peter with Achan, we see one who dies for what he has done and we see one who is loved despite what he has done. Jesus came in order that we may be forgiven and have a second chance.

Jesus us love!
