Day 118

Joshua 13:1-14:15, Luke 24:36-53, Psalm 52:1-9

It seems to be quite a calm day in the Old Testament, but then it is in the quiet that we can make time to listen to God. When we are faced by the difficult things, like yesterday, we sometimes fail to open ourselves up to what God might be saying in the bigger picture.

Today I saw the God of promise! God promised all of these people the land they would inherit, in quite a lot of detail, and today we see some of it being fulfilled. The people have walked across a lot of desert, they have endured a great deal of hardship (often by their own doing!) and they have travelled a long way with God. Through all of this they have been spurred on by the promise of a land flowing with milk and honey. But God is not just bothered by whole nations, he is bothered about individual people and each of them, like Caleb, is given a promise too. Again we see the God of promises fulfilling.

We will reach a time in the Old Testament when things start to go wrong, when through the prophets God starts to promise a Messiah. And we know that the promise is fulfilled. We have got to the end of Luke's narrative of the life of the Messiah and we see the proof to the disciples of of his resurrection. We also read of his Ascension, when he returns to be with his father. The fulfillment of a great deal of prophesy. The God of promises comes through on his word again.

" But I am like an olive tree
   flourishing in the house of God;
I trust in God’s unfailing love
   for ever and ever.
For what you have done I will always praise you
   in the presence of your faithful people.
And I will hope in your name,
   for your name is good"

We can flourish in the promises of God and trust in his unfailing love. The assurance of God is ours forever and the love of God does not leave us. We can hope in his name for all eternity.

Now that is a promise!
