Day 98
Deuteronomy 9:1-10:22, Luke 12:1-34, Psalm 42:6b-11
Today I found one of those passages that blow your mind , that just sum things up and bring meaning and sense to everything. One of those passages that you always knew about but had forgotten, or perhaps you've discovered it for the first time. Headed "Fear the Lord" it goes so, so much deeper than that. It just brings meaning to the covenant with God, it brings meaning to life! "What does the Lord ask ... walk in his ways ... love him ... serve him". "To the Lord your God belongs the heavens, the earth and everything in it". "The Lord set his affection on your fathers and loved them". What more could you want to say?
This idea of circumcision of the heart is really important. It is not about cutting the skin away from around the heart it is about positive act. The act of circumcision is all about dedication to God, about making a sacrifice, about doing something to show your love and devotion. So Moses is saying that they need to make these same kinds of moves, but it needs to come from the heart. Quite simply, God loves you, show your love for God. Love for the alien (by both God and the people) follows, with it ending with some praise and a blessing by God. This really is the most wonderful passage.
And then another blast from the Psalmist who might have identified with some of this in Deuteronomy. In the midst of his despair, when again he feels forgotten by God, he is still seeing the light. He asks where God has gone, then stops for a moment, sees what God has done and will do again, and then turns to praise again. This Psalm in its entirety with the passage from Deuteronomy can make some positive reading. Add in the blessing from the Gospel, how God will clothe you, feed you and care for you, and we get a real sense of the love of God.
Love is an amazing thing, it makes people do silly things. Today we see the love of God, a love that makes God do a silly thing, send his only son to die on a cross. Revel in the love of God, see what it has done and be comforted by what it will always do for those that He loves.
