Day 149

1 Samuel 24:1-25:44, John 18:25-40, Psalms 68:15-20

I shouldn't be surprised, because we know the story so well, but it still shocked me a bit when I saw the agenda that the Jewish leaders had. The only reason that they sent Jesus to the Romans was because they wanted him dead and they wanted it in a particular way. They don't try to hide it, when Pilate tries to wash his hands of it all, the Jews quite blatantly say that only the Romans can do it.

I always think when we get to Peter's denial, how bad he must have felt. I have let people down in the past and it sucks, you feel really bad and you would do whatever you can to change things. Peter must have felt so bad, you probably couldn't get any lower. But then that is why these two halves of the story fit together so well, in response to mistakes like Peter's, in response to the worst ever feelings, we are faced with the cross and the message of Grace that it brings. If anything can overcome the lowest moments and draw us out from the darkest places, it is the message of the cross and the entirely undeserved Grace of God bringing with it unconditional love.

David is overcome by the fact that he has made a covenant with God and that Saul is king and so he lays himself flat on the floor at Saul's feet. We are before a much greater king with a covenant that we have made. Lay yourself low in worship today.
