Day 156

2 Samuel 7:1-8:18, Acts 2:22-47, Proverbs 14:5-14

I was struggling to dig deep in today’s readings but then I started pondering David’s relationship with God. We have already looked at this and the fact that David was rooted in God.

We see even more of it today and perhaps learn some lessons from it. David’s intentions are great, he knows his place and at that moment he is in a palace living the life of a king. Then he remembers that the Ark (the presence of God) is still in a tent, so he wants to do something about it. It all seems quite natural really. But that is not part of God’s bigger plan, building the temple will be Solomon’s job. You could forgive David for feeling a bit rejected but he actually starts praying and it is all praise. It is not about what David wants, it is all about God.

We could ask whether there are times when we fail in this, when we fail to remember what God has done, even when we might feel as though things are a bit rubbish, we need to put them in the perspective of God. We need to look to God in the good times and in the bad times, and everywhere in between. When we are happy and when we are sad.

Similarly, the people of Jerusalem in the Acts narrative are kind of focusing on the disciples, asking what on earth these mad men are up to. Peter though is keen to point them back to Jesus, the son of God, and when the people look to Jesus the Spirit starts to work and there are baptisms galore.

Which way are your eyes looking today? Up to God or down amongst the things of earth?

  1. hey phil, dan here :)
one thing i would like to point out is the ACTS2 41. in one day about 3000 people converted! thatt is amazing. But by coincidence (which is how God works sometimes) i was on the open doors website surfing few some of the stuff and i found this quote about a book i am considering buying...
"The Book of Acts is filled with prayer meetings; every forward thrust the first church made was immersed in prayer. Take another look at the church at Pentecost. They prayed ten days and preached ten minutes and three thousand people were saved. Today we pray ten minutes and preach ten days and are ecstatic if anyone is saved. - Ronald Dunn"
and it also states that the evangelism is the Mopping up process of prayer. with the 24/7 coming up i just thought that this could help in some areas!

i also gave jaqi a link about opendoorsyouth shockwave which is a globall weekend of prayer for the world with loadsa people taking part. it could inspire us too. http://youth.opendoorsuk.org/index.php?/youth/events/shockwave_2011/.
if non of this makes sense we can talk about it on sundayish if thats okay :)
    from daniel :)
