Day 176
1 Kings 14:21-16:7, Acts 16:16-40, Proverbs 15:21-30
I think this is the first time that we get to see why the books of Kings are so called. There is a great deal of these very short accounts of the reign of random kings, we have kind of covered the big names already! What we will see as we go along is that some are right with God and others are not.
We will also see through these books, short references to little known prophets and it is good to know that prophecy is not limited to the big names like Isaiah and Jeremiah etc. We said yesterday that prophecy is still one of the spiritual gifts and it is good to look at these prophets and see that prophecy can be for single events. We may have someone say a word of prophecy over something in our lives and that may be the only prophetic word that they ever say, the Spirit moves as the Spirit wishes, and not as man ordains. It is these kinds of things that we have to give to God in prayer for testing to see what God is saying to us.
Having said that the Spirit moves as the Spirit wishes, we see another example of His power in Acts as the doors of the prison swing open and chains fell lose. Notice two things: first of all take a look at what kicked it all off - prayer and hymn singing. The power of prayer and giving glory to God can never be underestimated. The second thing to notice is the wonderful metaphor that is offered by this passage and leads to hymns like And can it be, with chains falling off. The power of Christ can free us from any prison that the world may place us in and release us from the most burdensome of chains, no matter how metaphorical they may be. "This is the power of Christ in me" to borrow the words from a very different hymn (In Christ alone).
Know that power in you today and submit yourself to Christ.
