Day 177
1 Kings 16:8-18:15, Acts 17:1-21, Psalms 78:9-16
A number of people in these passages come across the God who provides, from food to salvation.
At the start Elijah receives food from the ravens, as ordered by God, his needs are provided for. This is stretched further when he meets the widow, and the provision becomes a little more bizarre. If it wasn’t odd enough that ravens would feed a human, a bottomless jar that keeps on filling itself, now that is impressive. I wonder whether she ever rummaged around in the flour to see how far her hand would go down.
This is not a new concept though, manna from heaven would be an obvious example and there are many others, showing the way God has given food to his people when they have been in need. I know people who have worried about where the next meal would come from and prayed and then received a phone call inviting them out to tea. Now don’t go getting on your knees praying for a lottery win, but we do believe in the God who provides (according to need!)
In Acts we see different kinds of provision. For one, the book of acts is the story about the spreading of the Gospel of Christ, the ultimate story of provision for we are provided life for all time, throughout eternity. We also see the provision of safety to Jason and the others. I honestly thought that they had had it when the Jews got so angry, they were for a good beating or worse, but instead the Jews got so uptight that … they let them go. Now that is the hand of God.
I am minded of that passage in the Gospel around the Lord’s prayer where the father does not provide a snake when he is asked for a fish, in the same way our father in heaven knows our needs.
Bring your needs before God today and trust in the God who provides.
