Day 206
Hosea 11:12-14:9, Romans 9:1-21, Psalm 89:9-13
“That saved a wretch like me…”
And God said:
“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,
and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion”
I said yesterday that there were times when I have felt far from God, sometimes in a big way. Times when I might feel so wretched, when I feel that the distance between me and God is so big that nothing could bridge that gap.
The story of “Amazing Grace” is well known, written by John Newton, a slave trader and a person who knelt before the cross, looked back on his life and though that nothing could save him from all the wretched things that he had done. Then Grace fell from the cross and washed him clean, cleansing him from all those things that he felt were so bad.
No matter how wretched we might feel it probably does not compare to shipping people into slavery and causing the death of quite a few along the way. And still God says “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy”. By the amazing Grace of God, freely given in the love of Christ Jesus, that mercy falls on us, because God wants to give it to us.
Come before the cross of Christ, allow grace to soak into you heart and know that the God of all mercy wants to have mercy on you, the God of all compassion wants to be compassionate. That is the promise of Christ for you today.
