Day 212

1 Chronicles 9:1b-10:14, Romans 14:1-18, Proverbs 18:17-19:2

After a hard day of names (and a few more names), one may be forgiven for asking “what is the point of the book of Chronicles?”  If just one history book makes a claim you might be a little dubious about what it is saying. What we often forget is that there is a lot of corroboration in the Bible and what we are reading here (hard as it may be) is helping us to understand better what we have already read. But there are a lot of people called Uzzi!

Coming back to Paul we see a very good lesson for the church today. Sometimes we get caught up in the things that we think are right and condemn those who disagree with us. A lot of the divisions in the church are there because people disagreed with each other. Paul encourages the church in Rome to get over these things and to bear with each other in love. Some things aren’t worth arguing about and Paul tells us that loving one another is the most important thing.

This is something that we are not immune to today. Methodism, for example, is known for its stance on alcohol and once it was an issue if a Methodist drank, yet now we look to a person’s faith and not whether they drink or not. This can be true of what you eat, what we watch or even what we read (is Harry Potter wrong because of the magic for example?)

The message we carry from yesterday though is that love is the key. Love one another, look to their faith and their relationship with God, and then the church can grow together.
