Day 240

2 Chronicles 31:2-33:20, 2 Corinthians 1:23-2:11, Proverbs 21:5-16

I am sure that you have not failed to notice books by Dawkins and others which take a real swipe at God, trying to convince people that He does not even exist. It is not uncommon now to see similar programs on TV and articles in newspapers and magazines. Our faith is under attack on a number of levels and it is something that we can feel quite closely and quite personally.

This is exactly what the king of Assyria was trying to do to Hezekiah and his people. He was trying to undermine them, telling them that all the other gods they had come across had been useless, so what made their god any different. Psychological warfare at its best really. Trying to compare the one and only God to a load of gods that don’t exist is a bit of a daft approach to take though, of course the other gods were no good, they don’t exist! Then, after a prayer, God acts. Pride and gloating are never good, but you can imagine the angel coming to wipe them out mid sentence: “Our god’s bigger than your god, our god’s bi…”

Finally there is one line that is slipped in right at the end of the Corinthians passage that it is important to flag up. It seems clear that there has been a bit of tension in the Corinthian camp and people have been falling out without any forgiveness going on. This is something that happens a lot in the church today as well, but then check out that last line – “in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes”. Sometimes at the moment we start to get a bit unaware. As a body of believers, Satan will always try and divide us and every church must be aware not to let such divisions creep in.

Our God is far bigger than anything out there, and definitely bigger than a load of gods that don’t exist. Funnily enough he is also bigger than science and every now and again he will act through his angels and people will see. More often he acts through his Spirit and people see and feel the movement of God. Trust in that God today, and always be on guard for the schemes of the Devil.
