Day 241

2 Chronicles 33:21-35:19, 2 Corinthians 2:12-3:6, Psalm 104:1-18

When you are trying to sell a house they say that you should bake bread or put fresh coffee on just before the potential buyers walk through the door, the smell sets the right tone. Just like we can identify our favourite food, so some people can identify a smell that they really like – cut grass, lavender or simply coffee. Scent is something that we don’t forget.

Smell also has the power to change things for God has given us a great deal of power in the nature that He has put around us. Lavender to help you sleep is just one example of the way that we can use smells to help us. Paul is talking about us being the scent that can change peoples lives, that can give them an experience that they will never forget. When we are the scent of Christ and people experience that in an authentic way, then they can be changed in powerful ways.

Paul also uses a different analogy saying that we should be a letter written on peoples hearts, a letter that speaks of the love of God and His grace given in Christ Jesus. A letter that reaches right to the heart of the person receiving it, so that Christ remains written on that heart.

The challenge for us is to ensure that we are the scent of Christ, to make sure that in all we do people are able to smell God at work and nothing else. We also need to chose who in particular we are going to write on the heart of, ensuring that they experience God’s love direct to their heart. Choices that we need to make each and every day, why not start today.
