Day 256

Isaiah 30:19-32:20, 2 Corinthians 13:1-14, Proverbs 22:17-27

A couple of days ago the Leviathan came into our reading. That ugly Loch Ness monster style creature, yet a lot worse. That was matched with the message that the Lord was there to save the people from this nasty creature that represented the devil and hell.

This came back to me as I was reading vv27-28 of Isaiah 30. This seemed to portray God as just as mean and ugly but in all honesty he can be! When faced up against the Leviathan and all the powers of hell then our God can be meaner uglier, he will win any top trumps style fight between the two.

If we were to take a look at the story of Legion (Mark 5:1-2, demons called Legion “for they were many”) we see the demons pleading not to be tortured, they feared Jesus for they knew the power that he had over them. Leviathan is meant to represent the ugliest of them all and yet God can still defeat that. This passage falls amongst other stuff about hope and it is a message that really contrasts with the judgement that has been in previous verses.

Paul talks of the strength of God and in the Isaiah reading that strength is well and truly alive and kicking. Kicking Leviathan and all the powers of hell where it hurts. That is our God.
