Day 277

Jeremiah 7:30-9:16, Colossians 1:1-23, Psalm 116:12-19

Paul sets out a model here that is seen in quite a few of his letters, a model that is not a bad one for us to follow. In a few of his letters he starts by giving thanks, here it is in 1:3 and then again in 1:12. Whenever I see this, in the Psalms or elsewhere, and I know we have looked at this before, I always wonder if we give thanks enough today. Both in our prayers and in worship.

Colossians 1:15-20 really gives us something to give thanks for:
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
This is a wonderful statement of who Christ is and who God is, going right back to the very beginning. All of what we have seen about people not being able to see God and yet Christ offers an image, but just a snapshot, an image is not the real thing, it is a view of it, like a photo is only an image. In the same way we can not see all of God, but in Christ we see a glimpse of who God is.

I don't know which bit of this passage gives me the greater sense of awe. Whether it is the glimpse of the nature of God and the creation narrative, reminding us of the power of God. On the other hand, I am also struck by the fact that all life is held together by him. From the newest baby taking it's first gasp of air to the oldest person wise in their years. From the first bud of spring to the largest whale in the ocean. Everything in between is all held together in Christ. Both scary and amazing all at the same time.

Or am I amazed, that despite being a sinner, through the blood of Christ I am reconciled to God, as if I was white as snow.

Spend some time with the God who created you, the God who holds your life and the life of everything else together and the God who wipes the slate clean in the blood of Christ
