Day 285

Jeremiah 25:15-26:24, 1 Thessalonians 5:1-28, Psalm 119:17-24

I realised today how many death threats Jeremiah seemed to received, I didn’t notice Isaiah mention that many, but then he probably did have a couple. Speaking up for the Lord has it’s risks! And that is what we are called to do. Paul’s persecution brought home the fact that Christian life was never easy and yet Jeremiah's experience gives us a different slant. Jeremiah was a major prophet, he was listened to and respected, and yet when his message wasn’t wanted, he was for the chop. No matter how high up in social circles we are, there will always be people who do not want to hear the gospel, and yet just like the people aiming to kill Jeremiah and Paul, they are probably the people who need to hear the Gospel most.

So what do we do in the face of threats, we do what we should always do. Pray. Paul’s plea to the Thessalonians that they should pray continually is a plea that the church needs to listen to. I know personally that I do not pray anywhere near enough, and yet we should pray through all things.

If there is one verse that we should take from the readings today, it is not that we need to expect persecution, it is that we should be in constant prayer, through work, through exams, for friendships, for family. In all things we should pray.

Pray continually.
