Day 292
Jeremiah 40:7-42:22, 1 Timothy 4:1-16, Proverbs 25:11-20
Claire and I were recently at Salisbury cathedral whilst on holiday. Although we were not able to get into the main body of the cathedral we could still gaze upon the history of the place and saw a copy of the Magna Carta, an historic example of the church getting involved for the good of society. There was a great deal of history in that building and yet they also have the most beautiful font that is just a few years old. New and old meeting together.
We get a very specific view of the historical church sometimes, they certainly weren’t singing Tim Hughes worship songs nor projecting Youtube to aid the sermon. Whether we are thinking about the church today,. the church of the 1300’s or the first century church we get very different [pictures and yet if we take a look at what Paul is writing Timothy we see that some of the challenges are very similar.
People heading of to listen to Spiritualists and demons. People not focusing on the way that Christ teaches. We have some of the same challenges. People ask why the Bible is relevant today, because the challenges are still relevant today. The Word of God is timeless and one of the joys of this year has been the way that we can immerse ourselves deeper into it to find it’s relevance.
The going may be tough as we go through the last few months, but the Word remains the Word, reaching from the heart of God to the heart of man. Whilst at the cathedral we saw a very early King James Version Bible. Alleluia that we still have it in our hands today.
