Day 293

Jeremiah 43:1-45:5, 1 Timothy 5:1-6:2, Psalm 119:65-72

I had a conversation recently about what the church is all about. Is it about maintaining a building so that we have a place to worship, or even a place to go out and do mission? Is it about worship? Is it about the mission itself? These questions are questions we have to ask when we try and work out what we are doing and how are going to do it and resource it.

The early church we clearly about caring. When we look at what Paul has to say about the widow we see that there is a great deal of love and care out there. We know from other passages and letters that the early church was also about worship because Paul had a lot to say about propriety in worship. Funnily enough, the early church was virtually never about buildings.

It was about looking after the needy, the widow and the vulnerable. It was about working out the love of Christ in the community of the church and in the wider community.

What is our church all about?
