Day 340

Haggai 1:1-2:23, 2 John 1-13, Proverbs 29:19-27

Today we have read two books of the Bible in one day, which is quite impressive in itself. What it shows us though is that you do not necessarily need a lot of words to make your point.

Some people feel called to preach and others feel called to full time ministry in the church. You may not feel that you have enough to say to stand up in church week in week out and yet God still has a message to give through you. Take the last 4 verses of Haggai, simple message and simple imagery (the signet ring) to back it up. A very powerful message to a king and yet it took just 3 verses and simple words. God has something to say through us even when words are not our best skill.

The passage also gives us a reminder not to lose sight of the Bible for what it is and not to lose the context. We have been reading through constantly and some messages have merged through different books. John again mentions the command to love one another and we would be forgiven for thinking it is repetitive. We need to remember that this is a different letter to a different person in a different place and so the message stands on its own and equally important as when we last read it. A simple reminder to always take a look at each book in context – this time possibly John writing to an unknown believer in the area or even using “lady” as a figurative term for the church. It never harms to pick up a commentary especially when you could study a whole book in half an hour!

One day, two books, simple words and a reminder that the greatest book ever is actually made up of 66 different books.
