Day 363
Nehemiah 9:38-11:21, Revelation 20:1-15, Psalm 149:1-9
It has been interesting to note the points during this journey, where some of the deep snagging points of theological discussion have cropped up. I have already mentioned whilst we have been in Revelation the debate about whether we are living in the Kingdom or whether it is still to come. The thousand year issue is one of the key sticking points and perhaps highlights how the Bible can, when placed in the hands of people, be a source of division rather than unity. There can be real hatred between opposing camps when it comes to theology.
It shows one of our weaknesses as humans, how we can use the word of God to fuel hatred and scorn rather than peace and love. We get caught up on the message rather than the source of the message, on a few words rather than The WORD. And yet such debates about theology have shaped our lives and shaped our faith, they must always be had however, in the essence of love.
I have also found today an affirmation of something we have seen throughout this reading. That the Old Testament is not dead and is still very useful for teaching us and challenging us. I was duly challenged as we read the promise of the people, that they would keep the decrees of the Lord. As I went to Morrisons yesterday (Sunday) I did wonder whether I should have been there. Now Sunday is not necessarily my Sabbath as a minister but we should always be challenged to ensure that our walk is in line with the walk of the Lord, which is what the Israelites were promising. Like how we conduct theological debates and how we treat those who do not necessarily agree with us.
How are you walking at the moment, do you need to come back in line with Christ?
