The light holds the most power in darkness

It is in the darkness that the light holds the most power. Light a candle in a sunlit room and it will make very little difference. Light that very same candle in a dark room and it will slowly light the whole place. Now, don't get me wrong, light has power in light. Just look at the face of a 4 year old child viewing a candle sat on a cake in a bright room and you will see the power that it holds. Yet when the lights turn out, that power somehow radiates, from the candle and from the 4 year old.

A friend sent me a Facebook message this Christmas with a quote from Samuel Rayan:

“When we light a candle at midnight, we say to the darkness 'I beg to differ'”

This last couple of weeks have brought with them a little bit of darkness, and yet the light is there, shining as it always does, shining as He always does. When the light is there, darkness does not actually exist, it may be a little dull, it may be bleak, but it is not dark, for the light shines and says to the darkness "I beg to differ", it says in the politest of terms "go away!"

The thing is, that light never goes out. When we sleep and when we wake, when we soak up the light and when we have our eyes on the creeping darkness, the light stands firm behind and in front. In the midst of all my murkiness at the moment, I rejoice that I can see the light.

John tells us (1:5), "The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it." Oh how true.
